Palette Knife Technique

Palette knife class – Did you know there are 16 different marks you can make with the pallet knife? In this class, we will practice each one of these marks.Over the course of six weeks you will produce three paintings each of which focuses on one or two of the techniques that you have learned.

Drawing-1-10

Discover your innate ability to draw by shifting from analytical to intuitive, artful thinking. In this class, we use proven exercises—such as contour drawing—to activate the right side of the brain, helping you see and draw with greater accuracy and confidence. You’ll learn to quiet your inner critic and tap into the natural artist within. As you progress, we’ll explore essential shading techniques including smooth tonal shading, scumbling, and crosshatching to bring depth and dimension to your work. This class is perfect for beginners and those looking to reconnect with their creative side.

Perspective

This class provides a practical and accessible introduction to perspective drawing for artists. Students will learn the fundamental principles of creating depth and dimension through one-point, two-point, and three-point perspective. Topics include one-point perspective for exterior and interior scenes, two-point perspective for exterior and interior structures, and an introduction to three-point perspective. Through guided exercises and projects, students will develop the skills needed to create accurate and convincing architectural, landscape, and environmental drawings.

Color Theory

 This class is a fun hands-on practical experience in discovering and understanding color and its many properties. In this class, we will cover chroma, hue, value, saturation, as well as warm versus cool colors well doing fun exercises and creating small paintings.

Oil Painting Techniques

In this class, you’ll work from carefully chosen references provided by your instructor—so every object is selected with intention and purpose. This method ensures that each student develops essential skills with clarity and confidence. 

Together, we’ll explore textures like glass, metal, and fabric, practice a range of brush techniques, and dive deep into color theory and mixing. You’ll also learn about composition, concept development, and the foundations of artistic theory. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your technique, this class will help you paint with purpose and precision. 6 week duration. 

This class is offered twice per week.

Impressionism

We will explore several techniques long known and used by painters to add a looseness and an impressionistic quality to your painting. This class is fun and meant to inspire your future projects.

Portrait Painting

Week one- proportion and massing in a portrait from a photo to create a grisaille

Week two- facial planes and massing in from photo 2nd grisaille 

Week 3- color and shadow theory, painting skin tones over last week’s grisaille 

Week 4 – mass in new portrait and paint skin tones from photo

Week 5- paint from model

Week6- paint from a new model

Figure Painting

In this class we will work from life creating a grisaille in the first week and finish with color the second week. Learn techniques, proportion, anatomy, structure, value, and composition through guided figure painting. There will be a total of 3 models and three poses

Figure Drawing 1 and 2

Figure drawing has long been a cornerstone of artistic training, sharpening both the eye and the hand. In this engaging six-week course, you will strengthen your powers of observation while learning to translate the beauty and structure of the human form onto paper. Through guided instruction, practical exercises, and plenty of encouragement, you will build confidence in proportion, gesture, and form. The model will be wearing a swimsuit, creating a comfortable and focused learning environment.

As the weeks unfold, we will move beyond the fundamentals and begin exploring more nuanced challenges, including movement, expression, light and shadow, and personal artistic voice. Whether you are new to figure drawing or looking to refine your skills, this course offers both a solid foundation and an inspiring creative experience.

Still Life Painting

In this class, we will paint from life a skill needed by all serious artists. We will set up our own still life box, learn how to create a beautiful composition and how to achieve the effects of form desired in an effective painting.

Plein Aire Painting

In this class we will learn how to make a Plein aire painting. And then we will go out in the great outdoors and paint beautiful scenes around Knoxville. The class will meet in a designated park or venue each week.

Cityscapes in this class we will learn how to make a Plein aire painting in the city. We will be studying perspective, buildings and scenes around Knoxville. Then we will go out into the city and paint and designated areas weekly.

Cast Drawing

Discovering values through cast drawing- value is one of the most important aspects of a good piece of art. Many people have a hard time seeing values. In this class, we will make several drawings from casts where you can study all the properties of light and how they create form.

Pet Portraits

Learn how to paint pets. In this class, we will learn about structure, fur, making techniques and ways to make the animals eyes sparkle. We will cover dogs, cats and horses.

Concept to Creation

In this class we will study what goes on behind a great painting. We will discuss concept, composition, texture, movement, color harmony, and many other things that make a painting truly sing. We will look at the masters paintings as well as create some of our own first from still life and then from your own composition.
